but as an adult, you can do whatever you want! i don't drop the 70 plus dollars on those skanky ass costumes at the store. i like making my own. I LOVE MAKING MY OWN!! (and i'll spare everyone a huge long diatribe about how i hate that halloween is just an excuse for normal girls to dress like skanks. if you're a skank, be one all year round. don't hide behind halloween. and seriously, are you THAT uncreative? that's all i'll say about that.)
anyway, onto pumpkin carving! MH and i went to a pumpkin patch after work and picked out some decent sized gourds! all i thought was, YES! LOTS OF PUMPKIN SEEDS! so we took 'em home, along with some pizza, beer, and a scary movie, and dug in. my FAVORITE part is cleaning out the inside! squishing my hand in all the guts gives me such satisfaction. the designs we chose ended up being harder than we thought, but i think they turned out nicely, no?
and because a few people asked, here's the recipe for the pumpkin cranberry scones:
1 c all-purpose flour
1/2 c whole-wheat flour
1/2 c cornmeal
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 c dried cranberries (but i like them, so i add more!)
6 oz (3/4 c) canned pumpkin
3/4 c soy milk (it's a vegan recipe)
1/4 c vegetable oil
1/4 c pure maple syrup
preheat the oven to 450. lightly oil a baking sheet.
to a large bowl, add the flours, cornmeal, baking powder, and salt. whisk or stir well to distribute the baking powder and salt throughout. add the dried cranberries and stir again. set aside.
to a medium bowl, combine the pumpkin, soy milk, oil, and maple syrup. add the pumpkin mixture to the flour mixture, stirring just to combine. do not overmix or the scones will be tough. drop the batter by 1/4 cups onto the baking sheet, 1 inch apart.
bake for 12-15 minutes, until lightly brown on top. served hot. great with fruit preserves or even with chili or soup!

OK seriously chica, did your Mom teach you how to cook/bake? Because I have no idea what happened there with me. And of course it's always shameful for a wife not to be able to cook for her husband (according to my Mom at least LOL)
Anyway, yes I love Halloween. I was always indifferent until I had kids. I can't wait to carve! We generally don't do it until a couple days before because the stupid chimpmunks and squirrels naw the heck out of them *sigh*
Yay!! Your post got me all excited about Halloween. First of all, I'm in total agreement about the skank costumes. Slutty nurse, slutty pirate, slutty witch... come on.
Nice pumpkins! I always make the same goofy triangle-eyed face. I love it though. I also love digging the yucky stuff out and toasting the seeds. My specialty is pumpkin bars with cream cheese frosting. mmm! I do love this time of year. :)
I love, love, love pumpkin carving -- but i usually do it the day before Halloween so my pumpkin doesn't turn to a ball of mold.
Oooh... I love Halloween too! My favorite fun holiday by far! And thanks for posting the recipe - I think I'm just going to have to make them too!
I love pumpkin carving!
I need to put together an outfit for the 27th... a bunch of us are going out and I want to be creative. But, my limited time is leaving me feeling under the pressure. Got any good ideas!??!
You are a master pumpkin carver! I hate carving pumpkins because I am afraid of knives, so I've never known the pleasure. Can't wait to see your costume. I actually don't much enjoy Halloween and I think it's b/c I am not super creative when it comes to costumes. I just want someone to give me one!
Cool jack o'lanterns! And thanks v. much for the scone recipe. I'll let you know how mine turn out.
Also: I like the new masthead!
I'm not a huge Halloween fan, surprise, surprise. I was always a soccer player when I was growing up so I could just wear my uniform - no need for a custome.
I like your carvings though...
Cool pumpkins!!! I love Halloween too!!! I put my lights up on the 1st of October and just bought 3 new fluorescent black lights. Pretty soon it will be time to dust off the fog machine :-) I like to dress scary and give candy out to the kids.
Thanks for the recipe! I love cranberries and pumpkins and scones, so I'm sure I'll love this recipe (I like the little candy corn pumpkins too so if you find a recipe using those pass it along too).
Are you as excited about your marathon as I am for you? Just wondered....
i suck at pumpkin carving. you own me at that.
Sounds like fun
