my weekly crosstraining usually consists of walking to the mailbox and/or fridge and dancing in the shower. but i figure i should try something a little more challenging, say spin class? the two most dreaded words in the dictionary. i tried it like 5 years ago and never mounted up again because it hurt my butt way too much. great workout, i'll admit, but sore sore bum :(but i figured i'd give it another try, wade through the sore-butt syndrome, and see if i like it enough to buy the special shorts or seat. and who knows maybe it will firm my bum soooo much i won't need a gel seat. ha!
so, for all you avid and crazy spinners out there, any advice for a newbie?

Have you tried swimming for crosstraining? It's a terrific full body workout with very little risk of injury.
Buy the "special shorts" first!!!
I don't wear the special shorts. but, I do make sure I am to class early enough to grab one of the cushions to put on my seat. They don't have enough for all 20 bikes. First come, first serve.
DO, make sure your seat is at the right height. I have learned that from TriJodi, so if you have any questions, I would ask her. I like to have my handle bars a little lower, as it results in a harder workout! I know I hated the feeling of the sore butt the first couple times, but now I don't seem to get it as much! Maybe it's an immunity. I don't know! I think it also has to deal with the position of the seat...in reference to how far forward or far back it is.
Good luck! They say try it 3 times and then go for a run and you SHOULD see a difference in your running...
I friggin' hated spinning until last summer, when I was recovering from The Evil Ass/Hip Injury. I found it to be a great way to get my cardio in until I could run again. But you're right: it's hard on the crotch.
The first 3-4 sessions my crotch and behind were uncomfortable and in pain (I actually wrote a much more graphic description you all would have enjoyed but decided to keep my job instead). However, once you go to just a few classes, that feeling will disappear. Well, 90% of it anyway. I think there's always going to be a tiny element of crotch pain following spin class (esp if your instructor is big on intervals), but I haven't felt or noticed it in over a year now. Everyone I've talked to feels the same way- it goes away very, very quickly.
I recommend sticking with it, spinning is by far, the most kick-ass cardio and stretch workout I've found. Great for cross training on days you shouldn't run!
