yippee skippee!! the orthotics are in!!
i'm truly embarassed to admit that i thought these orthotics would make me feel like braces would to a teenager. or training wheels to a 10 year old. the fact that i needed orthotics made me feel totally dorky.
but they make me feel the total opposite. they make me feel like i have some secret weapon! some special power.
i'm just happy that now all my foot worries can be put to rest and that i don't screw up the alignment of anything else higher up. i can finally run pain and injury free!
(*knock on wood*)

Feet are weird. I had major forefoot pronation during my first two marathons, resulting in a monster blister on the arch of my left foot. Finally got orthotics, and problem was solved. However, three years later, I developed plantar fasciitis, and after months of trial and error, my PT finally suggested I ditch the orthotics. "Just see what happens," she said. I followed her advice, and while the PF didn't disappear automatically, eventually it did. And I haven't worn orthotics since.
But wait; there's more. The insidious, persistent hip injury (piriformis syndrom and bursitis) is making me wonder whether I should use the orthotics again. My PT and a podiatrist explained that your feet change, especially when you're a runner. So my long-winded point is, they'll do you well for a long time, but don't be surprised if, in a couple of years, you don't need them anymore.
Congrats on your "training wheels"; they will make running so much more comfortable.
