is it possible to get whip lash in your sleep?
or maybe it's meningitis.
whatever it is, dudes it hurts! my neck is so stiff and so freaking sore, it hurts when i'm not even moving. i was roused from deep sleep at around 4am that's how bad it hurt.
the odd thing is that this neck pain is more frequent than ever. something i've picked up in my late, late 20s. stress? bad posture?
or maybe my brain is just getting heavier and denser and my poor little neck just can't support it. or maybe i'm just getting old.

Same thing happens to me sometimes. That's why I've got my chiropractor on speed dial.
I've slept wrong and woken to that kind of feeling. I usually have to rub a muscle relaxant like Ben Gay into it to function the rest of the day. I hope you're in better shape.
Maybe you need a better pillow.
I HATE that!! One night that happened and for three days I slept on my back and wouldn't move for fear of that pain coming back. Its bad news bears!
That's what it is: you're getting wiser with age!
I've experienced neck pain recently when I do workouts or activities that just use my neck ever so slightly more than usual (like house-shopping on the drive home, whipping my head around to see if it's a "for sale" or "windows by" sign in front of an awesome house).
So, I've tried to incorporate some neck-strengthening exercises into my workouts, which ends up giving me more neck pain.
Moral of my story: I'm no help. But ibuprofen works.
Over the last couple of years, I've had more neck pain than I ever had in my 20s. I swear by my chiropractor and massage therapist.
Apply a heat to it. You probably just slept a little weird.
Try one of those Tempurpedic pillows, maybe? Both Mr McG and I have one. He always gets neck pain and has been good since.
This morning I woke up with a BLACK EYE! Talk about completely freakish & random. :)
I always have the weirdest dreams, so injuries when I wake up are pretty common.
Jess suggested a new pillow. I have one of those ergonomically correct, memory foam ones -- LOVE IT! Highly recommend it.
When I was heavily into swimming, one morning I woke up, turned over and heard a loud crack in the neck region. And the pain that rushed it... I thought I seriously had broken my neck.
Turned out I had just overstressed all the muscles, doc gave me some muscles relaxers and I slept for two days. Not fun.
My rec would be to invest in a pillow suited for your sleeping position and to take a look at your swimming form.
Hope the pain passes asap!
