but even without the pressure of racing, i STILL couldn't sleep the night before. and as usual, i had some funky dreams, none of which i can remember right now. something about getting lost, or forgetting my id or something. anyway, we were up before the sun and on the way to the race we caught some great views of the sunrise.

the half marathoners took off first and the swarm of bobbing heads snaked around the stadium. Once they had a 10 minute head start, they unleashed us 5kers. as always, i positioned myself in the back because i'm slow and i didn't want to get in anyone's way. turns out that was a ba d idea. nothing against walkers, but they always travel in packs and it's a pain to swerve around them. why weren't THEY in the back?
but it probably did me some good, in terms of not starting me out too fast. earlier in the week i had planned on frontloading the run, considering my weekend extra curricular activities, i decided it best to save my energy.
the three miles went pretty fast actually. for most of the race, i tailed this really tall guy with a long red pony tail. he was easy to spot and kept me at a good pace. towards the end though, i just up and passed him. i wish i had more to report, but 31 minutes goes by pretty quickly. YES I SAID 31 MINUTES!!! which if you've been following along, is more than a minute faster than my 5k last month! i always knew corona was good for you!
here are my amazing splits: (well amazing for ME anyway)
1: 11:05
2: 10:21
3: 9:43
i wasn't even looking at my watch really until after i passed pony tail guy. and i was shocked! i kicked it up in the last leg, but the finish line was so crowded narrow it was hard to really zoom in. i think i'm really starting to get the hang of this 5k thing...
here's me after the finish, with my petite pony tails:

after the race, my parents and i met up with my brothers, sister in law, and nephew. we napped, took the lil one to the park, ate the biggest lunch known to man, then sat like logs while my nephew provided the entertainment, doing his little sexy dance. who knows where he picked this up!

You PR'd! All that speedwork and spinning is paying off. I predict you'll be running sub-30-minute 5Ks by summer. BTW, I hate race walkers. I know that will make me hugely unpopular with some, but they bug the crap outta me during a race. If they'd stay to the side of the road, I'd have more patience with them.
One more thing: I get anywhere near San Fran, and I'm kidnapping your nephew for the day. He is so dang cute!
congrats on smashing your 5K time!
> i chose to dine alfresco with some
> ice, cold brews.
Woohoo! Oh wait a minute, you said "alfresco" not "au natural". My bad.
Nice time and great split on that 3rd mile.
Yahoo for PRs!!!
As far as those pesky walkers go, I just yell really loudly and sorta rudely "Excuse me, (clear throat), excuse me" to let them know they are in the way of this runner girl! Or you can be politer than I am, but it's not nearly as fun!
hey there - congrats on the PR! Way to negative-split!
Good work on your race! I like the pigtail pic!
Personally, I always position myself somewhere in the middle of a race gate b/c I don't want to get behind those walkers, runners with baby strollers, and kids, but I don't want to be in front of those who will certainly plow me down.
What a gorgeous sunrise -- and good omen. A pre-race beer (or two) sound like the elixer you need to PR despite weaving around all those walkers.
Good observation about the packs. I've nothing against walkers in a race, but I agree they should start in the very back since they are doing the slowest pace.
Since beer is obviously a performance enhancer for you I suggest experimenting with the number of beers the night before a race to optimize your running and perhaps discover another PR within you. I suppose you will take the conservative approach and drink like half a beer more to see how that works. That's where woman and men differ. If a man were to suspect that beer made him faster he would be sitting down to a full keg to see how much he could down before the starting gun. These are the guys you would find at about mile 1 with beer foam coming out of their noses. Moderation is overrated.
Good job speedy! The weather sounds wonderful. Enjoy the high created by your new PR, or was it the beer?
Beautiful pics... and gorgeous splits!! All around wonderful!
awesome race!
:o)
Great race! No matter where you start, you'll run into the walkers. I've started large races 30' from the start line only to have to weave around folks walking 5 abreast right off the start line.
You'll be under 30 in your next race.
is that a pink and white running skirt????? oh my goodness if it is you must email me and tell me brand!! :O)
Doesn't drinking beer qualify as carbo loading?
You go girl!
